Objectives

Major/Minor/Modified Main Goals

The Comparative Literature Program at Dartmouth College prepares its majors and minors with the following main goals in mind:

  • To foster informed perspectives on understanding literary and cultural difference in changing global contexts across historical periods.
  • To encourage and further the students' willingness and ability to study literary and cultural forms across two or more languages.
  • To help students connect the study of literary and cultural forms with other areas of their study and curiosity, in line with the College's liberal arts mission.
  • To prepare the students to understand and critique the aesthetic, linguistic, material, social, and information-technological constraints and conditions under which literature and other cultural forms emerge.
